The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is one of the greatest ways to see the untamed Colorado Rocky Mountains. The 45-mile route snakes up the Animas Canyon, originating in Durango and following the river through historic sights and breathtaking scenery. The railroad has been voted as America's #1 Train Ride 2022, sealing its place as "America's Railroad." In August 2022, we traveled out West to document the railroad's rich history and beautiful scenery, following K-28s 473 and 476 northward to Silverton. Each day, doubleheaders were required to haul the sold out trains and heavy consists up the mountain, putting on an impressive show for all photographers and tourists. The Durango & Silverton's history reaches far back into the 19th century, with the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1881. Within less than a year, the railroad replaced the Old Animas Toll Road to the mining town of Silverton. The Silverton Branch, as it was known, was prosperous until the panic of 1893. The future looked grim into the 1940s, but the rise domestic tourism in the US proved the branch was still a lucrative operation. The D&RGW kept the branch active until they sold the line to Charles Bradshaw in 1979, turning it into the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. In 2018, the railroad faced difficulties with wildfires and mudslides, resulting in the majority of their fleet being converted from coal to oil firing. The motive power in this video are K-28s 473 & 476. Both locomotives were built by The American Locomotive Company in 1923 for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. D&SNG 473 was retired in 1967, restored in 1981, running since then. It underwent a coal to oil conversion in May 2021. D&SNG 476 was retired in 1967, restored in 1981, and taken out of service in 1999. It was rebuilt in 2016-2018 and converted to oil burning in June 2022.
