The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is venerated as "America's Railroad" for its reputation as one of the nation’s most famous tourist lines. Nestled in Southwestern Colorado, this stunning railroad winds through cliffs and canyons, offering passengers one of the ultimate scenic train rides. With roots tracing back to the early 1800s, it stands out as a gem of American railroading; a testament to the enduring legacy of the D&RGW narrow gauge in the Colorado Rockies, and to the continuing future of steam railroading. This full-length video features the famed K Class locomotives, focusing on K-36s 480 & 482, as well as K-37 493, working through the treacherous Animas Canyon early in the fall season. The whistles heard in this video are a 5" Ashton 3 Chime on 480, a Denver & Rio Grande Western 5 Chime on 482, and a New Haven 6 Chime on 493. The K-36 class of steam locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925, holding the distinction of one of the best preserved classes of steam locomotives. These locomotives were delivered to the D&RGW classified as "K" for 2-8-2 Mikado and "36" for 36,200lbs of tractive effort. Quickly, these workhorses spread all across the 3rd and 4th Division, with their unique outside frame design seen all across the rugged mountain terrain. While these engines were designed to be freight haulers, 6 of the 10 K-36s were equipped with steam heat and signal lines, hauling passenger trains like the famed San Juan, which ran from Alamosa to Durango. These locomotives endured the dieselisation era, hauling freight trains all the way to 1968. Locomotives 480, 481, 482, & 486 have made a home the D&SNG, while 483, 484, 487, 488, & 489 are at the C&TS. Locomotive 485 is the sole locomotive of this class that did not make it into the preservation era, which was scrapped in 1955 due to an accident two years prior. These locomotives celebrated their 100th birthday this year, with centennial celebrations taking place in the summer of 2025. The K-37 class of steam locomotives are the youngest and strongest of all the D&RGW Narrow Gauge Locomotives. These 10 locomotives were the railroad's solution to a need for more motive power in a time of material shortage. All 10 K-37s were originally standard gauge C-41 consolidation class locomotives built in 1902 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, but were converted to K-36 copies, being rebuilt as narrow gauge Mikados in 1928 by the D&RGW's Burnham Shops. The locomotive boiler, tender, and trucks are all the remain of the original C-41s. The locomotives were mostly freight haulers not permitted West of Gunnison or on the Silverton Branch, but 3 out of the 10 were equipped with steam heat and signal lines for passenger service. Only 2 of this class of locomotive were scrapped, with 490 and 496 meeting the torch in 1963 and 1955 respectively. 491 is at the Colorado Railroad Museum, 492, 494, 495, and 497 are at the C&TS, 493 and 498 are at the D&SNG and 499 is on display in Cañon City. 491 and 493 are operable, with 492 being under restoration.
