Norfolk & Western 611 is venerated as one of the greatest engineered steam locomotives of the twentieth century, holding the distinction as "The Queen of Steam." This monarch of ingenuity and post-war railroading is a fine-tuned machine, capable of hauling high speed passenger trains, showcased during her second stint on the Virginia Scenic Railway. The famed steam locomotive hauled excursions on the Buckingham Branch Railroad, traveling approximately 50 miles on the C&O route. These Shenandoah Valley Limited excursions saw the return of steam on the mainline, with the train reaching speeds of up to 40 MPH and meets with both CSX or Amtrak. Norfolk & Western 611 is a 4-8-4 "J Class" steam locomotive, built in 1950 by the N&W Roanoke East End Shops. The N&W J Class were designed for speed, hauling passenger trains over the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the surrounding states. These streamlined beasts were constructed in three batches, with 600-604 being built in 1941, 605-610 in 1943, and 611-613 in 1950. The 611 had a fruitful 8 year career with the N&W, hauling big name passenger trains and racking up thousands of miles. She was retired in 1958, but was briefly brought back to service until the N&W stopped steam operations entirely in 1960. She was then donated to the city of Roanoke for public display. Ideas of a full steam restoration circled the locomotive through the 70s and in 1981, she was moved to the Southern Railway Norris Yard for restoration work. By August of the next year, 611 was once again moving under her own power, doing so for the first time in 23 years. She would be a mainline excursion star until 1995, when her boiler ticket expired and was returned to the Roanoke City Council for display in the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Her second major restoration occurred in 2015, as part of the Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam Program. When that was cancelled in 2018, N&W 611 would find a variety of places to operate, including the NCTM, Strasburg Railroad, and Virginia Scenic Railway.
