In the time history analysis of nonlinear large-scale structures subjected to seismic loading, engineers often rely on the Rayleigh damping model, due to its simplicity and computational efficiency, for modelling energy dissipation that is not already accounted for by hysteretic material models. However, this model has notable limitations, such as difficulty in accurately matching damping across multiple vibration modes and the introduction of unintended damping forces, which can compromise the accuracy of structural design under seismic loads. These issues can result in underestimating seismic demands, leading to unconservative designs. This seminar will explore how new ideas can be incorporated into damping models to improve the reliability of seismic time history analysis. We will demonstrate how new methods can overcome the shortcomings of traditional approaches like Rayleigh damping, particularly in simulating inelastic energy dissipation during extreme seismic events. Attendees will gain insights into practical strategies for enhancing structural analysis, with examples highlighting real-world applications in seismic design.
