The Ghostek Atomic Slim is one of the coolest cases I’ve seen in this entire 50-case test. Mixed materials, aluminum frame, leather back, it’s absolutely gorgeous. But once I started using it and ran it through my drop tests, two red flags showed up that I don’t think I can ignore. Ghostek Atomic Slim Review -this is one of the more unique cases in my 50 -there’s so much to this Atomic Slim -first thing you’re going to notice is the aluminum frame -the frame has slits cut into it for small TPU grip strips -corners have something similar -so any type of drop isn’t going to bend the aluminum frame -the back of the case is covered in either leather, othere’s have fabric -the back isn’t flush with the edges either, it’s sunken in which might be an issue for some -the TPU liner on the inside of the frame is lined with microfiber and impact foam -very luxerious for your iPhone -this case looks like it’s going to be a tank right? -is it going to fail like the other “tough cases”? -this is a slick case -there’s barely enough texture for your fingers to get at -the TPU quite smooth and the grip strips on the one side isn’t aggressive enough -case is going to add 69g to your Pro Max -way above the 47g average -going to increase the bulk of your iPhone by 80% -it’s an odd duck when it comes to protection -intial impact was around 10.5G’s which was average -the subsequent rotation? It was close to 360/s, which is 39% higher than average -this case liked to dance during the drops -BUT despite spinning more, this case was very effective at dampening the impact -it was 51% better than average -that was enough though because the average force going into the iPhone was 10% higher -the biggest reason for that was the settling time. It took almost 20% longer for the case to come to a stop during a drop -overall, it’s a pretty average case in terms of corner drops -how about face first drops? -what do you think’s going to happen with a case with low screen clearance? -well, Ghostek desigeners did a bang up job because the case passes -the aluminum frame does wonders for keeping the case on the iPhone during a drop -intial impact was about average at -4% -case did the opposite as the corner drops and rang longer by 37% -and overall force was 17% lower -for the camera lump -the majority of the lump is protected by a TPU ring which is backed up by the aluminum frame -on the inside you have impact foam at the top and bottom of the cutout -intial impact was 29% better -settling rate was slower because of the metal frame (my guess) -overall force going into the case was 15% below average -so overall, does an average job eating the initial corner drops but how the iPhone ends up isn’t going to have as much of an impact -back of the case is 3mm thick -DESPITE being sunken in -corners are 3.9mm thick -again, lined with impact foam and a clump of TPU -case rigiditiy is off the charts at 81% above average -your iPhone isn’t accidentally popping out -for MagSafe, it took 6.5N to pull things off, 7.3 to push -that’s 30% below average -this is a massive red flag for me -buttons on the case are integrated and tough to use -really not a big fan of them -camera cutout is also a cutout so despite being a tough looking case, it exposes a little more of the iPhone -screen access is decent despite the bulk of the case -case edge is flat so your they don’t feel like speed bumps -port cutout is massive and will fit any cable you want -the pinky test is a little weird because the cutout isn’t symmetrical so the back feels great but the front is a little sharp -not enough for me to really complain about it.
