Can one day truly capture the magic of Japan, from breathtaking cherry blossoms to culinary perfection? Continuing the journey from Takayama to Kanazawa, we were excitedly hopeful to see the sakura in full bloom. Our first full day in Kanazawa began with a breakfast buffet at The Hotel Sanraku Kanazawa. Conveniently located, Kanazawa Castle Park was about an 8 minute walk. Greeted by the cherry blossoms in full bloom, and a bright morning, we took in their beauty. After appreciating the delicate flowers and entering the Kahoku-mon Gate, wandering the grounds before crossing the moat to enter the main entrance, Hashizume-mon Gate for a brief visit inside Gojikken. Leaving the Castle Park through Ishikawa-mon Gate, the entrance to Kenrokuen Garden is approximately a 5 minute walk. Being one of three most beautiful gardens in Japan, it balances six elements to experience. The spacious and vastness of the open areas dotted along the intimate pathways winding through the timelessness of the aged trees and along the manmade two legged stone lantern. There are places to enjoy the movement of water and distant views. All of these come together to create a sense of serenity found only here. On the edge of Kenrokuen, is Kanazawa Shrine. Drawn to this shrine by the mysterious well, I later learned that this sacred area held the hidden tale of how Kanazawa got it’s name. The legend is of the potato farmer, Imohori Togoro who ended up finding a spring where gold rose up with the swirling water. Today, the original location of the spring is unknown and the shrine was built in its honor. After seeing the sakura that this trip was primarily designed around, there was one more thing on my dream list. To indulge at an authentic sushi counter. Fortunately and gratefully, our concierge highly recommended Sushi Matsunoshita and booked us a special seating. Here the seven meter long wooden counter is made of one piece. During the day, there is a view into Kenrokuen to be enjoyed while experiencing the culinary artistry of the chef. 00:00 intro 00:41 Kanazawa day 1 begins 02:41 Kenrokuen Garden 04:23 Kanazawa Shrine 04:53 Sushi Matsunoshita
