As her painting starts to take shape, uncover an emotional tale of chance and artistry revealed behind unrelated yet familiar moments. Behind the Frame is a vivid, interactive fiction about an aspiring artist on the cusp of finishing the final piece of her gallery submission. A relaxing, eloquent experience that can be played at any pace. Become immersed in a panoramic world filled with resplendent colors, beautiful hand-animated visuals, and a smooth, easy-listening soundtrack. As a passionate artist, seek the missing colors that will bring your paintings to life - all while remembering to take the occasional coffee and breakfast breaks that keep you going. There is more than what meets the eye, for every painting has a story to tell. Released On: Aug 25, 2021 Developer: Silver Lining Studio Publisher: Akupara Games Platforms: PC, iOS, Switch, PS4 Genres: Adventure, Puzzle, Point and Click, Visual Novel --------------------------------------------- Behind the Frame is a beautifully crafted and cozy interactive story about a young woman piecing together her life through examining the various pieces of art in the room around her. It combines light puzzle mechanics with a sweet but melancholy narrative-driven experience, and the beautifully drawn art style and serene music help to deliver an engaging experience while gracefully telling its story. There is however minimal gameplay. While described as a puzzle game, the mechanics are very basic, generally requiring little more than clicking or moving the cursor around specific areas. There's no challenge or risk of failure, and the puzzles are merely a means to progress the narrative. This simplicity aligns with the game's cozy atmosphere but will disappoint players wanting more than just the story, regardless of its quality. The other big drawback is the game’s brevity. The main story can be completed in about an hour, making it easy to finish in a single sitting. A 45-minute side story adds extra context, but it does drag a bit, and lacks the charm and polish of the main experience, and further highlights the limited scope of the game’s mechanics. It’s worth playing only if you’re curious, but skipping it won’t detract much from the overall experience. Ultimately, Behind the Frame is more of a soothing and memorable interactive visual novel than a true videogame. While its emotional depth and artistic presentation should leave a lasting impression, its short length and simplicity make it hard to justify the full asking price. Lastly, I kept expecting a dark twist during my playthrough, which in hindsight detracted from my overall experience. Without giving too much away, the story maintains its sweet and gentle tone throughout—so just try to relax and enjoy yourself.
