The HSV VL SS Group A SV, affectionately, known as the "Walkinshaw," stands as one of the most polarising and significant icons of Australian motoring history. Launched in 1988, it was the first vehicle produced by the newly formed Holden Special Vehicles (HSV), following Holden's high-profile split with Peter Brock. Its primary purpose was pure homologation: to get Holden onto the race track under Group A regulations. Clad exclusively in Panorama Silver, its controversial body kit was developed in British wind tunnels by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.31, a staggering 25% improvement over the standard VL Commodore. While the radical fibreglass extensions earned it the nickname "The Plastic Pig, or “Batmobile" every vent and wing was functional, designed to stabilise the car at the high speeds of Mount Panorama. Underneath its aggressive exterior, the Walkinshaw featured the first electronic fuel-injected version of Holden’s 5.0-litre V8. This engine was a technological leap for the local industry, utilising a unique twin-throttle body intake and a custom plenum. Inside, the cabin balanced its race-bred intentions with period luxury, featuring grey tweed velour sports seats, a Momo leather steering wheel, and a production build plate that marked its place in the limited run of 750 units. With its radical styling and high price tag, the Walkinshaw eventually cemented its legacy as a collector's Holy Grail, representing the bold, unapologetic dawn of the HSV era.If you liked this video, I have linked some others that you may find of interest and these are as follows: The Other Charger R/T • The Other Charger R/T - One You Might Not ...
