Ba Duan Jin 八段锦 — Eight Pieces of Brocade. One of the most well-known qigong practices in Chinese martial arts. Every tradition has its own version. This is ours — infused with the Gulun approach. Here I'm practising with Dong Dong, one of Shifu's senior students, on a winter morning in the forest next to the school. Also joining are a couple of students who have only been training for a few weeks. This is one of the first practices you learn here. A preview of the upcoming programme led by Shifu Wu Nanfang. A great routine for opening the whole body. Personally, I use it on meditation retreats — a 10-minute warmup that is itself a perfect adjunct to sitting practice. Training flow and stillness, harmony and movement, flexibility and leg strength. Teaching the body to move beautifully.
