Lake Superior PP Canoe Route to Sand River and Down to the Big Lake - Pt.1

After a long winter without canoeing, we were champing at the bit to get out and adventure far and wide with our new (to us) Royalex boat. For our ice-out first trip of the 2023 year, we had originally planned for a 10-day adventure in NW Ontario, but circumstances prevented that trip from taking place at that time. . We opted instead to stay closer to home and do a trip that we'd been looking at for several years on Lake Superior PP maps. It's a route not often traveled, so not much had been written about it, but we were certain it would be an adventure. . We ended up doing this trip prior to parks staff being able to perform any trail maintenance, so that aspect presented its own challenges, along with the already tough topography and elevation changes that are typical of most Lake Superior Provincial Park interior trips. . Another challenge was adapting to the idea of double-carry portages: the traversing over land between lakes with all of your gear and also the water craft in more than one trip. We have historically been able to perform this task in a single-carry portage, so adapting to double-carries took some getting used to. . The biggest challenge would prove to be the recent loss of a loved one, and our coming to grips with the impact and permanence of that. Shutting down the fast-paced, ever stressful nature of our year to this date was tough at first, but we knew that immersing ourselves in the natural world would allow us to slow down and reflect on everything in a more relaxed way.
