In The Footsteps Of A Legend - Towab Trail - Challenging Hike To An 80ft Cascade

Tawabinisay was a legendary Ojibwe guide in the Agawa region of Northern Ontario back around the turn of the 20th Century. Stories about his midnight hikes and remarkable navigational skills are still told to this day, but most notably his mention in Stewart Edward White's 1903 book "The Forest" tells much of what is known about the man. It's an intriguing book overall, and a must-read for outdoor enthusiasts - especially if you plan to explore the eastern shore of Lake Superior, or the LaCloche region of Huron. . Having heard about the legend of Towab and the trail that bears his name, we took the opportunity to explore the Agawa River in early spring this year. The hike is 24km round trip (an out-and-back linear trail), so we decided to make it an overnight trip, but you could do the whole hike in a day if you so desire. . The water of the Agawa River was at its highest flow of the year during our visit. This made for a powerful cascade at the end of the trail. The month of April was so rainy preceding our May trip that the trail itself was strewn with several mini-cascades along its length. These seasonal creeks run down the canyon walls only in very wet weather and make for challenging traverses on the steep portions of trail. They also serve to enhance the magic of the trail and keep the hiker in an almost constant state of awe at the beauty surrounding them. . We highly recommend this trail to anyone looking for a challenging hike with a fabulous payoff at the end.
