Beyond just cold plunging, I'm well under way for my next ultra race. This ultra trail running phase wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t perfect motivation or pristine discipline. It was gritty. It was cold. It was January and early February in one of the coldest early winters I can remember. A lot of treadmill miles. A lot of solo miles. A lot of wrestling with low energy and procrastination. A lot of daily cold plunges in freezing temperatures. This was the base meat of the build. I leaned heavily into consistency — daily plunging, regular running, weight training 1–2x per week, and leaning into group workouts when motivation wasn’t there. I didn’t nail everything. My downhill strength suffered from so much indoor running. My nutrition slipped at times. Body fat crept up a bit. But the miles still accumulated. The vertical gain kept stacking. The habits stayed intact. And somewhere in this phase, something shifted. The Foundation Matters Most | Ultra Marathon Faith and Fitness I was reminded how critical my faith is to my discipline. Not just as motivation — but as foundation. The physical training matters. The mindset matters. But what anchors it all matters more. That realization is going to shape Phase 3. We survived a brutal early winter. We built the engine. Now the real work begins. Next phase: sharpening, specificity, and preparing for 74 miles with 16,000 feet of gain at the Georgia Death Race. If you’re building toward something hard — physically, mentally, spiritually — you’re not alone. Stay consistent. Stay grounded. Keep stacking.
