Breaststroke Heel Touch On Stomach The next drill in our breaststroke series explores how to set the height of the breaststroke kick. Often, one of the biggest flaws we see in breaststroke is that the heels do not come up high enough in the water. We like to see the heels come up to the hips; this establishes great height. We stress patience with breaststroke as we don't want to rush things; however, it is all about timing the speed in the correct spot. This drill, Heel Touch on the stomach, is a good drill for swimmers to recognize what the proper height should feel like. We can perform this drill on the back as well. In this progression, we will not be using any equipment, allowing the swimmer to keep their he.ad in alignment. The swimmer will raise the heels, touching their hands, and then perform the breaststroke kick (remember to kick downward at an angle). The swimmer can lift up their head, take a breath, and then put their head down. Remember, breaststroke is a very heavy feel stroke. Feeling a strong connection and timing really helps the swimmers feel fast. Our swimmers should be focused on finishing a great line.
