NACFC 2023 | S22: Let’s Focus on ADHD and Executive Functioning

While it has been known that the rates of depression and anxiety are two to three times higher in people with cystic fibrosis, the community is now realizing that the rates of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are also elevated. Untreated ADHD can contribute to decreased quality of life, distress, difficulty with medical adherence, and overall challenges in functioning. At the same time, it is important to accurately diagnose it considering its differential. This timely symposium discusses ADHD in both children and adults living with CF. It also discusses what ADHD is, how it presents, and how it is diagnosed in children and adults. It highlights literature on ADHD in CF that has come out in recent years. It discusses particular characteristics of ADHD and its impact on a person’s neuropsychological functioning. The presenters also address treatment, both with behavioral modifications and medications. Moreover, sleep in ADHD will be highlighted. In addition, the symposium touches on other neurocognitive concerns with people with CF, including due to aging, highly effective modulator therapy side effects, and post-transplantation.
