In this video, Andrew Sellars and Sean Seale talk about setting up the ideal duration and intensities for a short step test. Short step tests are most often used for performance evaluations at high intensities. They have the benefit of being completed quickly, and allow athletes to reach maximal intensity before they become fatigued from the test itself. Ideally, these tests should last 9-12 minutes. Some protocols use very specific warm-up routines to help improve repeatability and validity. Because the goal is to limit the total duration of the test, most short step tests use 30 second to one minute intervals, with a relatively large increase in intensity with each step. Maximal testing is most commonly used in conjunction with VO2 testing, and can be performed in a number of sports settings using VO2 Master. We will look at the results of some of these tests in future videos. WHAT IS VO2 MASTER? The VO2 Master Analyzer is the ultimate portable metabolic analyzer. At a weight of 200 grams, the VO2 Master Analyzer provides the best field testing conditions currently available. No tubes, cables or backpacks needed. Testing data is streamed directly to our free mobile app where it can be viewed in real time. Test VO2 Max, determine training zones, resting metabolic rate, breathing coordination and more.
