Turkmenistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the west. Its capital, Ashgabat, is famous for its stunning white marble architecture. With a population of around 7 million, Turkmenistan is one of the least densely populated countries in Asia. Over 80% of its land is covered by the Karakum Desert, while oases and mountainous regions like the Kopet-Dag Range in the south add variety to its landscape. Historically, Turkmenistan was a major stop on the Silk Road, with ancient cities like Merv thriving as cultural and trade hubs. It was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881 and later became part of the Soviet Union until gaining independence in 1991. The country boasts a rich cultural heritage, known for traditional carpet weaving and horse breeding, especially the Akhal-Teke breed, often called the "heavenly horse." Turkmenistan also has the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves, which play a big role in its economy, alongside cotton production. The country’s climate is extreme, with scorching summers, cold winters, and very little rainfall, contributing to its arid environment. Despite its resource wealth, much of the population faces economic challenges. Turkmenistan is also known for unique attractions like the Darvaza Gas Crater, burning since 1971, and UNESCO sites like Ancient Nisa and Merv, drawing visitors to explore its history and natural wonders.
