Antares Hoof and Rope Play Antares has two major holes in his acceptance of the human world: allowing people to hold his hooves and feeling safe having ropes around or on him or asking him to do something. His reaction to requests for either was typically a panicked withdrawal. Hence, two years in, he has never had his hooves trimmed and we cannot lead him safely outside of the 35 foot paddock where we play. This Christmas, Antares made huge strides on filling in those to holes. Val invited her husband, Dave, to come out and rub Antares, ask for all four hooves and clean them. Antares has a particular skepticism to men, since men trapped him, gelded him and put him in a trailer that took him hundreds of miles from home. Women were safer by far, in Antares’ book. Dave arrived, walked up to Antares, rubbed him gently, touched the back of his knee or hock to ask for a hoof, Antares handed them over and Val and I were left gaping at how easy they made it all look. WOW, just Wow! Antares has been terrified of ropes since he carried an 8 foot long lead line attached to his web halter when he was trapped, tripping himself untold numbers of times. Any pressure on a line, any dangling line, any rope approaching his body triggered panicked flight. We decided to convert ropes from objects of fear to toys he wanted to play with. We brought out 5 lines of different sizes, named them, dumped them on the ground and invited him to “touch”, then “grab”, then “give me” then “catch” the ropes. While we suggested a named rope, he chose the one he felt safer with, then success built on success and he was able to deal with them all! Val then snapped on the 22 foot line and started to lunge him at the walk. He felt fine until she started to let the belly of the line drag on the ground when she halted. You can see residual fear in his posture, but he kept it together and got better at handling it. All in all I would say that Antares gave Val her very best Christmas present of 2025!
