In this endocrine physiology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy breaks down the key roles of the parathyroid glands and calcitonin in maintaining calcium and phosphate homeostasis. This session covers the hormonal control of bone metabolism, renal calcium handling, and vitamin D activation—foundational concepts for understanding disorders like osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism, and hypocalcemia. We begin with the parathyroid glands, focusing on their release of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response to low serum calcium levels. You’ll learn how PTH increases blood calcium by stimulating bone resorption, enhancing renal calcium reabsorption, decreasing phosphate reabsorption, and promoting vitamin D (calcitriol) activation, which further increases intestinal calcium absorption. The lecture then explores calcitonin, a hormone secreted by the parafollicular (C) cells of the thyroid in response to high serum calcium. While less dominant in adults, calcitonin functions to inhibit osteoclastic bone resorption and lower calcium levels, especially during periods of calcium excess or skeletal growth.
