While it may seem like the simplest of tea making utensils, the humble tea bowl or chawan (茶碗) holds a central place in Japanese tea culture and can be found in many different shapes and styles, each with their own history and purpose. Here I go over some of the more common shapes of chawan and what makes each one unique (while trying unsuccesfully not to talk at length about styles and histories...topics for future videos!) As noted in the Ido-gata section, various theories about the origin of these chawan have waxed and waned in popularity. A large part of the mystery is the lack of any ido chawan in Korea, either surviving or in archaelogical digs. This has been used to discredit the 'peasant's rice bowl' and 'Korean ritual bowl' theories. Currently, a popular explanation is that most of the real, original ido chawan from Korea were commissioned by Japanese teaists. I'll leave it at that for now, but Ido chawan deserve their own video. 00:00 - Introduction 00:43 - Tenmoku-gata 03:29 - Ido-gata 06:30 - Hatazori/Komogai-nari 08:26 - Hantsutsu-gata 10:40 - Tsutsu-gata 11:55 - Hira-gata 13:24 - Badarai-gata 13:43 - Kutsu-gata 16:28 - Wan-nari 17:56 - Mayu-gata 19:06 - Wa-nari/Rin-Gata 19:20 - Goki-gata 19:35 - Sugi-nari 20:09 - Asagao-gata 20:26 - Bajōhai-gata 20:52 - Momo-gata 21:06 - Hissen-gata 21:19 - Amigasa-gata 21:37 - Shihō-gata 22:26 - Final Notes You can find our chawan collection here: https://www.tezumi.com/collections/ch...
