An Elite 10% player asked for an example of a solid route. He stated his average individual race was 1.57-1.58, and was looking for an alternative to the sometimes risky moves that he took while racing. This route represents a path that an Elite player can take which minimizes risk. The most important skills are basic drifting and releasing drift boost, combined with good turbo management and occasional shortcut use. Here is some commentary on the track. 0:05 - I don't get the world's best start here, and my drift pattern got messed up (which is common in elite!). I aim to get in one drift and release before doing around the curve. Then, I aim to use two to three drifts in a row, planning to release just before I hit the edge. My goal is to hit 750 - 800 kph speed when I go off the edge. My performance in Laps 2 and 3 are much better examples of this. 0:15 - I use my thrusters to hop over the little bridge part between buildings. While you could drop down and start drifting underneath the building connector, it's tight in there, and there's a possibility you'll crash. By using the thrusters to hop, you'll miss out on some drift, but will likely stay much safer. 0:16 - As soon as I land, I do one drift to the left and release. This gets my speed up to about 700 kph. I do another drift, this time to the right, and release. The goal is the same - to get my maximum speed up. Now I can do a longer drift to the left and release. My goal is to reach 700 - 750 kph before I get to the edge. When I get to the edge, I turbo, holding the down direction on my joystick to keep my nose up so I don't have to use as much thrusters. You'll see that I barely need 50%. 0:28 - I flip right to the left side of the last vertical platform, as I've turbo-ed past all the other ones. I am aiming for somewhere between the middle and upper road lines. If I drive off the edge somewhere between these lines, it sets me up in a good position to try to get the green boost arrow on top of the steeple. In this example, I only succeed on two out of three laps. If going for this arrow makes you crash, then stop going for it! 0:33 - I do one drift to the right and release it for a speed boost before immediately performing a double drift to sharply take that right hand turn. When I straighten out to release my drift, I jump to hop the railing and turbo through the shortcut between the buildings. When I reach the checkpoint, I flip to the right to make the cut even tighter. When I land, I start a drift. Each lap builds on the previous one. You'll notice a few screw-ups each lap, bouncing into the sides, going into the coals, missing the boost pad on one lap, nearly missing achieving the last boost on the last lap. These are all normal in Elite. If you find you're not getting enough boost to make it through all three laps, then modify your first lap to not take the shortcut through the last building and drift around the last S-curve before the finish line instead. Or, look for other places you could safely add drifts in. Even with all the bumps and sub-optimal play, this route ended up sub 1.55, a full two to three seconds faster than the original route. Give it a try and see what times you can come up with! I'd suggest aiming for 1.55.500. Then, as your skills improve, you can try making longer drifts, adding in advanced techniques, and using additional shortcuts to cut off even more time! Good luck out there.
