Nkwaleni farm is situated in KwaZulu-Natal near the Goedertrou Dam and has a competitive advantage in the export market due to its proximity to the Durban port, which is approximately 150km from the farm. The Nkwaleni valley falls in the summer rainfall area and has a warm and humid climate during the summer and cool dry winters, creating an ideal environment for the production of lemons and grapefruit. The farm predominantly produces citrus, with most of the produce destined for export to the UK, Europe, Middle East and Japan. The farm has 420.40 hectares of arable land, of which approximately 271 hectares are in full production with another 2 hectares of young Valencia orchards, totalling 273 hectares of planted citrus. Nkwaleni’s crop comprises of Eureka lemons and Valencia oranges, red and white grapefruits and bananas. The available fallow land offers new owners the opportunity to establish approximately 80 hectares of Macadamia or additional citrus plantings. This will provide a good crop mix on the farm and will fully utilise the farm’s packing infrastructure. The farm’s close proximity to the Goedertrou dam means that it is the third offtake from the dam and can comfortably utilise 80% of its allocated water rights. There are also various sources of water on the farm including boreholes and water seepage from the canal, ensuring that irrigation is never in short supply. The farm has a good infrastructure with fit-for purpose farm buildings, management housing, worker housing and a packing shed with equipment. Nkwaleni’s strategic location, plentiful water supply and the superior quality of the fruit it provides, ensure that this farm enjoys a competitive advantage over farms in the northern part of the country and it is ideally positioned to go from strength to strength.
