People hesitate to trust the algorithms and artificial intelligence pervading their professional and personal lives (e.g., ChatGPT). Most accounts attribute irrational sources of this reluctance to algorithm aversion, a prejudiced perception of algorithms. This view suggests that people generally prefer to rely on people than algorithms. But there are many counterexamples where people prefer algorithms to people (e.g., for directions). Carey Morewedge, Professor of Marketing at Questrom School of Business, examines patients’ reluctance to trust medical artificial intelligence. Morewedge proposes that people make self-serving comparisons between people and algorithms when algorithms threaten important aspects of their identity (e.g., their expertise or uniqueness). This theory offers new ways to identify which and when people will trust algorithms and how to increase trust in and adoption of AI.
