The way I see it is there are three different types of turns on a cross country running course. Before we talk about the turns, you need to run your race flag to flag, and not necessarily follow the line the whole time. This is because the flags are the edge of the course, or the inside of the course. Run the shortest distance by taking the flags tight for a faster time. Here are three tips for running the turns correctly. 1. Take the inside on a gradual turn. Even if there is a crowd, you want to be on the inside because that is the shorter route. 2. On a tight turn, start from the outside and cut into the inside right by the flag. This will allow you to keep your momentum and still stay close to the flag on the turn. 3. When there are two flags in a row, like a left turn and then a right turn, or vice versa on a cross country course, you need to stay tight on each flag. I call it shooting down the middle. Don't stay wide on both turns. Stay tight on each turn. I hope these tips help on your next XC race. Happy Trails - Coach Tief
