What Does It Mean To Have the "Spirit of Prophecy"? This weeks Sabbath School Lesson puts forth the idea that we have no help when it comes to interpreting scripture besides good hermeneutics. While we agree that hermeneutics are important, it leaves us still with many unanswered questions on the interpretation of many bible passages. After all, every denomination applies hermeneutics to the study of scripture, but they all come up with different interpretations. Obviously, everyone uses somewhat different hermeneutics, or they at least apply them differently. And of course, everyone thinks that they are using the right hermeneutics. This shows us that there has to be something beyond hermeneutics to help guide our interpretation of the scriptures. What is this something? Scripture tells us it is the "Spirit of Prophecy!" But unfortunately, many Christians and even many SDA's don't know what scripture teaches that it is. In this week's video, we take a look at what the "Spirit of Prophecy" actually is. Many SDA's think it refers to Ellen White's writings, but scripture shows that is not quite right. Revelation 1:9 reveals that the Spirit of Prophecy was active in John the Revelator's day even before he was inspired to write "Revelation." We also look at statements from A.T. Jones, entitled, "The Spirit of Prophecy, The False and the True," written in 1916, one year after Ellen White's death. A.T. Jones knew Ellen White very well, and he was a Seventh-day Adventist during the time Ellen was alive. His article was written at a time in which others that were alive during Ellen's lifetime could also attest to his claims. His claim is that when Ellen White was alive, SDA's claimed that the Spirit of Prophecy was the Holy Spirit speaking through a living prophet. Jones wrote: "Till Mrs. E. G. White died their constant claim ['their' being the SDA church's] was that the Scriptures are not the spirit of prophecy, because the spirit of prophecy must be manifested through a living person."
