Our journey through Croatia began in the captivating seaside town of Pula (Pola), a place brimming with Roman history, jaw-dropping ruins, delicious food, and coastal charm. From our first steps off the bus, Pula stole our hearts with its blend of antiquity and vibrant local life. Join us in this video as we dive deep into Pula’s must-see sights, sample local flavors, and discover why this city is an unmissable Croatian destination! 🏟️ Roman Amphitheater: The Heart of Pula Our adventure kicked off at Pula’s legendary Roman Amphitheater—a true icon and the city’s most famous monument. After a quick walk from our Airbnb (just two minutes away!), we grabbed our tickets (50 Kuna per person) and entered this ancient colossus, which once held up to 20,000 spectators! Built during Emperor Vespasian’s reign—at the same time as Rome’s Colosseum—the Pula Arena is unique for retaining all four side towers and three stories. It’s the sixth-largest Roman amphitheater in the world and impressively well-preserved. The brochure made history come alive: gladiator battles, wild beasts, and ancient spectacles took place where we now stood. 🌅 Marina Strolls & Boat Tours With hunger building but restaurants not yet open, we set off along Pula’s scenic marina. The waterfront bustled with boats offering tours to neighboring islands, like the famous Brijuni National Park—a group of stunning Adriatic isles steeped in archaeological and natural wonders. Although we skipped the tours this time, the marina made a perfect backdrop for a leisurely walk. ⛪ Pula Cathedral: A Glimpse Outside Our sightseeing continued to the impressive Pula Cathedral (Katedrala uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije). While we couldn’t get inside (closed during our visit), its striking exterior and the sense of history around it were still worth the stop. 🍕 Pizza in Croatia: Jupiter Pizzeria Experience Lunchtime finally arrived and we made a beeline for Jupiter Pizzeria, reputed as the best pizza spot in town. While you might expect us to try only Croatian specialties, pizza is a local favorite here, thanks to Pula’s proximity to Italy—just across the Adriatic. We ordered two pies: Frutti di Mare: A seafood extravaganza topped with tomato, cheese, scampi, mussels, tuna, sardines, squid, and garlic. Istriana: A regional delight layered with tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, and rucola. Paired with full-bodied local red wine and sunshine, this meal was a highlight. 🏰 Pula Castle (Kaštel): Panoramic Views Next up, we climbed the hill to Pula Castle, a Venetian fortress from the 17th century (entry 20 Kuna per person). The museums inside are interesting, but the real draw is the panoramic view—from the amphitheater in the distance to the old city bell tower, harbors, and shipyards. 🏛️ The Forum & Temple of Augustus Descending from the fortress, we arrived at Pula’s ancient Forum, once the social and political heart of Roman Pola. Here stands the Temple of Augustus, an elegant relic turned into a small museum (entry just 10 Kuna). Inside, you’ll find ancient statues and artifacts. 🎨 Roman Mosaic: A Hidden Gem Next, we hunted for Pula’s Roman Mosaic (Rimski Mozaik), tucked behind a parking lot and through a nondescript gate—follow the signs! The reward? An intricate, well-preserved floor mosaic depicting the “Punishment of Dirce” from Greek mythology. 🍦 Gelato & Beach Time: Sweet Endings After a full day of walking, we treated ourselves to gelato at our favorite stand right outside our apartment—waffle cone pistachio for just 1 Euro! The next morning, at our gelato vendor’s suggestion, we checked out a local beach, even though it was mid-October. Pula’s beaches are pebbly not sandy. 🌇 Sunset City Walk To wrap up our time in Pula, we strolled the city at sunset, soaking in the warm glow on ancient stones, lively squares, and the inviting coast.
