Tug Hill Trophy Outdoors Even with a great 2025 season (multiple does and bucks down), I still made some costly mistakes that limited opportunities and took away from the enjoyment. Here’s my honest top 5 mistakes from last year and exactly how I’m changing things for 2026. Not planting food plots → As soon as snow melts, I’m getting out to spray and prep plots early—no more skipping this. Not getting trail cameras out soon enough → Cameras go out in April or May this year to build early intel, track off-season movement, and create a real hit list. No real off-season scouting → Late February/March scouting trips to camp—looking at winter patterns and historic sign. Turn work trips into speed scouts. Not prepping or setting up stands early → Every stand checked and prepped by early summer. Shooting lanes cut, permanent blind projects finished, and traps set as soon as I pick target bucks. Not slowing down to enjoy the process → 2025 was hectic—new baby in August, Dad’s illness. I capitalized on limited chances but missed the camp time I love—sitting, watching deer naturally. 2026 will be different: more patience, more presence.
