Life often feels like a series of identities, achievements, and roles we proudly carry. But what happens when those labels fade? Who are we beyond them? In this deeply moving and powerful talk, Bijay Nair shares his journey from growing up in a small home in Mumbai as the son of a taxi driver to serving as an officer in the Indian Navy, witnessing war during Kargil, and later reinventing himself after leaving the forces. Through personal stories of failure, fear, courage, discipline, and resilience, he explores how every stage of life presents its own illusions, about success, strength, security, and identity. From facing rejection, academic struggles, and life after the uniform to discovering purpose through distance running and mentoring underprivileged youth into the armed forces, his story is a reminder that life is not about titles or recognition, but about self-awareness and purpose. This talk encourages us to look beyond labels, embrace change, and continuously rediscover who we truly are. Bijay Nair is an Indian Navy veteran, marathon runner, mentor, and motivational speaker. Born and raised in Mumbai in a modest household, he rose through determination and perseverance to serve as a naval officer and participate in critical operations during the Kargil conflict. After completing his service, he transitioned into civilian life, overcoming new challenges while discovering his passion for endurance running and mentorship. He has completed multiple marathons, including ultra-marathons, and actively mentors underprivileged youth preparing for careers in the armed forces. Many of his students have gone on to join the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
