Huge practice change: BiPAP for preoxygenation (The PREOXI trial)

In this video, I perform a critical appraisal of the PREOXI trial, and discuss the role of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation SOLELY for the purpose of preoxygenation. This paper will likely change practice for many emergency and critical care clinicians, although if you have listen to my RSI and then they die lecture (   • RSI and then they die (How to intubate sic...  ), you will know that I have been recommending this for years. The major take home points from this video are: 1 This mutlicenter RCT demonstrates less peri-intubation hypoxia (as well as potentially less peri-intubation cardiac arrest) when using NIPPV for preoxygenation 2 The trial is not perfect, and there are limitations that need to be considered when applying the results clinically 3 I think the results are practice changing for many patients, but probably don’t need to be applied routinely First10EM is a free open access medical education (FOAMed) platform created and run by Dr. Justin Morgenstern dedicated to high quality education focused on resuscitation and evidence based medicine.
