Knee replacement surgery is the most common joint replacement done in the world. In 2018, there were over 700,000 done! Total knee arthroplasty, as it’s known in the healthcare field, is a treatment option for severe knee arthritis. It is usually done after other less invasive treatments have been done. The after care for a knee joint replacement is HIGHLY important to make sure that the person undergoing the operation has a successful outcome. The usual way this is done is the patient begins physical therapy treatment in the hospital within 24 hours after the knee operation is completed. Surgeons usually tell patients they’ll be up and walking within a day and back to “normal” within a few months. What surgeons don’t typically see however is that getting back to “normal” really takes 12 months. It’s just that the surgeon’s involvement in the care of the patient ends a few months after the knee replacement surgery happens.
