Y’heyu l’ratzon As a musician I see the words "evening service" and immediately think of the Anglican evensong, but this is not the only kind of evening service that exists! Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French composer who grew up in the south of France in a Jewish family. He wrote liturgical music both Christian and Jewish, and for somebody like me who is used to hearing 20th century Reform Jewish music (often of Germanic or eastern-European origin or containing Chassidic elements) hearing these texts with this kind of mid-century French music is quite jarring! All of these are traditional Friday evening sabbath prayers (Jewish days begin at sundown) which any observant person would know by heart. His transliterations are clearly geared towards French speakers so I have substituted modern ones from the Union Prayer Book since that is one that I worked with for a few years. Milhaud says that this service is for children's use but I see no reason why all children should be singing in the treble octave so my "youth choir" has lower voices too.
