In this lesson we'll discuss the 7th cognitive distortion, "Emotional Reasoning". Next Lesson: • Should Statements - Lesson 8 - Free Anxiet... Previous Lesson: • Magnification and Minimization - Lesson 6 ... Emotional reasoning is when you take your negative emotions as evidence of the truth. This is like thinking, “I feel like a loser, therefore, I must be one.” And thoughts like, “I feel angry, therefore, I must’ve been wronged.” Do you see why that’s a cognitive distortion? If your sentence starts with “I feel”, you aren’t using objective facts. You use a feeling in place of a rational argument. It’s an easy shortcut, but gives an overly negative perception of the world. The key to overcome this is to notice when you are using phrases like “I feel” or “It feels like I should”. Then stop and say, “a feeling isn’t a substitute for evidence.” Watch the video to see some emotional reasoning examples. ▶ Free Anxiety Guide: https://www.headfulness.com/guide ▶ Website: https://www.headfulness.com
