Be sure to check the fit of your components before installation. If an individual part is a little tight, you may want to devise your own installation sequence. As an example, you may prefer to install the vee seal, thrust pad and large woodruff key for clutch cone first before presenting the PTO shaft to the upper bearing housing. In this video, we begin by passing the narrow portion (threaded end) of the PTO shaft into the upper bearing housing and through the self-aligning bearing we mounted in the previous episode. A small woodruff key is then pressed into the keyway, ensuring it is fully seated. Sand one face lightly with a coarse or medium sandpaper (80 - 120 grit), if necessary, to get it in. By the way, new woodruff keys are cheap to replace and easily available from your local mower shop. The top sprocket is installed next after aligning the keyway with the protruding section of the woodruff key. Be careful here as there isn't a great deal of metal surrounding this keyway. Secure the sprocket with a washer and bolt. The vee seal is installed next. This seal protects the open bearing and sits up against the bearing housing. It doesn't sit inside the housing. We use a beautiful solid brass thrust pad and fibre washer from Scott Bonnar Fabrication and Parts (@sbfabandparts). The brass looks great and obviously compliments the colour scheme of this mower. George also makes aluminium thrust pads in black and clear anodised. 🌐 Scott Bonnar Fabrication & Parts / sbfabandparts Brass thrust pads were originally used on the solid deck mowers but are a worthy upgrade for both solid and twin rail machines. Alternatively, if you're working to a budget, a black nylon thrust pad costs only a few dollars. Whichever way you go, remember to install the thrust pad with the oiler hole facing up. A brass thrust pad will still wear if the clutch and fork are incorrectly adjusted and both types of thrust pad must be oiled every time you use the machine. The fibre washer serves as a handy early warning system so if it starts to disintegrate it's time to replace and adjust your clutch. A large woodruff key is then installed in the other end of the shaft before passing the clutch half (containing the cork) over the shaft and sliding the clutch cone into place. As with the small sprocket, align the keyway inside the clutch cone to meet the woodruff key. The cone needs to slide along the PTO shaft in use so the fit should be slightly on the roomy side. 🎬 Watch all the rebuild videos here • Scott Bonnar 45 Rebuild 🎬 Watch all the teardown videos here • Scott Bonnar 45 Teardown 🎬 Check out the SB 45 walkthrough videos if you're new to cylinder mowers and Scott Bonnars • Scott Bonnar 45 Walkthrough ⚠️ Your safety is your responsibility.
