The first bearing is located inside the bearing housing bolted to the side of the mower. The bearing used in this application is a self-aligning type and it moves across multiple axes simultaneously in order to accommodate variations in the bolt-together assembly of the solid deck and sides. A self-aligning bearing can also be use on a twin-rail mower but is not necessary, in theory, because the twin frames are welded together. The self-aligning bearing will also adjust to small variations in the motor shaft centre, minor clutch issues, or rail sag (you would ideally remove those variations…). The self-aligning bearing is greased using a thick grease, such as the moly grease used in this video. Grease must be packed into the centre of the bearing before the bearing is pressed into the housing. The bearing housing assembly is finally bolted to the inside wall of the mower. A circular rubber seal is used between the bearing and mower side to reduce the likelihood of debris entering the bearing. The housing is secured using two bolts, each receiving a star washer and nut. The cutter clutch bearing is pressed into place using the same technique we've used for the intermediate clutch bearings. Note this bearing has one rounded edge, which is fitted to the inside of the bearing cup. Grease the bearing and press it home so its outer edge sits slightly below the top rim of the bearing cup. 🎬 Watch all the rebuild videos here • Scott Bonnar 45 Rebuild 🎬 Watch all the teardown videos here • Scott Bonnar 45 Teardown 🎬 Check out the SB 45 walkthrough videos if you're new to cylinder mowers and Scott Bonnars • Scott Bonnar 45 Walkthrough ⚠️ Your safety is your responsibility. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching! © 2020 Michael Hanes. All rights reserved.
