(Please note: The keyword I mentioned in this video doesn't work on Youtube, only on Facebook!) Today we’re making the cutest spring/Easter bunny door hanger on a shiplap round, and Barry jumps in to help paint, dry, and keep us laughing! We’ll paint a chunky wood bunny, stain and assemble a faux shiplap round, distress the edges for that farmhouse look, stencil HOP in orange, make a stacked bow with carrot ribbon, and finish with DIY carrot embellishments. This easy, beginner-friendly DIY makes a big statement for your front door, porch, or mantel. What you’ll learn in this video: How to get smooth paint coverage on wood (and the simple “cool-to-touch” dryness test) Why you shouldn’t over-brush and when to add a second coat Fast, foolproof gel stain application on a shiplap round Easy distressing with a sanding block for farmhouse charm How to glue and brace a multi-piece round so it stays flat Centering and spacing letter stencils (the quick “place P, center O” trick) Fuzzing reusable adhesive/silkscreen stencils so they release cleanly Combining wood glue + hot glue for instant hold and long-term strength Making a stacked bow with ribbon tails and adding DIY carrots Simple hanging hardware shortcut using a heavy-duty hole punch and twine Chapters: 0:00 Surprise! Barry kicks off the live and starts painting the bunny 1:30 Brush technique: stop over-working the paint + coverage tips 3:45 Staining the shiplap round (smooth, even, and fast) 6:10 Drying tip: how to know when paint is ready for coat two 8:05 Distress-sanding the bunny and tail 10:20 Assemble the round: back braces, glue choices, and alignment 12:45 Fuzz and place letter stencils; choose orange paste for HOP 15:00 Simple centering trick so letters line up every time 17:10 Attach the bunny tail; layer hot glue with wood glue 18:40 Punch hanging holes and add twine 20:00 Make the stacked bow (carrot ribbon, green checks, orange polka dots) 22:30 Add the DIY carrots to the bow center 24:30 Final reveal + where to display your bunny door hanger Supplies used or similar: Wood shiplap round (approx. 16–18 in) with two half-round braces for the back Wood bunny cutout + separate wood tail Acrylic/chalk paint in a creamy white/vanilla Dark gel stain (we used an Americana-style gel stain) Reusable adhesive/silkscreen alphabet stencils for “HOP” Chalk paste or craft paint in orange for lettering Sanding block or sandpaper (medium/fine) Wood glue (thick/fast grab) and hot glue Heat tool or hair dryer Heavy-duty hole punch or drill, natural jute/twine Ribbon: carrot print, green checks, orange polka dots; optional natural fiber accents Small squeegee, paint brushes, paper towels Helpful tips mentioned: If the surface feels cool after drying, it’s still damp—give it another minute. Don’t overwork paint; apply, move on, and come back for a second coat. Distress edges after paint dries to instantly define shapes like the bunny tail. For instant hold plus long-term strength, use a few dots of hot glue with wood glue. Fuzz stencils on fabric before placing so they lift cleanly from stained/painted wood. Align letters by positioning the last letter first (P), then center the O, then place H. Project ideas and variations: Swap orange letters for soft pastels or classic black for a neutral farmhouse look. Add a name or “Welcome” instead of HOP using smaller stencils. Use raffia or burlap ribbon and neutral carrots for a rustic vibe. Seal with a clear water-based topcoat if your sign will be exposed to the elements.
