When was the last time you truly thanked nature? Dean invites us to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the world around us: the salt in the air, the sound of the waves, and the small moments that remind us how deeply we are part of the natural world and how small actions can strengthen that connection. As a Geographer and Head of Sussex Bay, a large-scale nature recovery initiative spanning 100 miles of coastline and serving over 1.7 million people on the South Coast, Dean has seen how a strong sense of place can inspire powerful change. With more than twenty years of experience across sustainability, education, government, and community sectors, he explores how leadership rooted in kindness, empathy, and evidence can bring nature restoration to life. Guided by the vision of Generation Restoration (Gen R), this talk shares the story of Sussex Bay, a living seascape being revived not by corporations, but by communities. Together, we explore how citizen science, shared joy, and everyday gratitude can help us restore our coastlines and our sense of belonging. When we care for people and the planet, we all thrive. When we thank nature, we begin to heal with it. Dean is a Geographer who advocates for leadership grounded in kindness and purpose. He has paused his corporate career to lead Sussex Bay, a large-scale nature recovery project spanning 100 miles of coastline and serving 1.7 million residents across the South Coast. With over 20 years of experience in education, sustainability, government, charity, and technology, Dean focuses on inclusion, impact, and partnership. He is passionate about connecting people, place, and nature, and champions community collaboration as a path to meaningful change. Alongside his professional work, Dean volunteers his time to support charities and community groups and is a quietly confident public speaker committed to fostering empathy and environmental stewardship. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
