Wickets are one of the best ways to improve top speed and sprint mechanics, but setting them up can be confusing. In this video, Coach David from Outright Fitness breaks down an easy, practical way to set up and use mini hurdles (wickets) to develop better front-side mechanics, posture, and stride efficiency. There's a lot more technical aspects to setting up and running wickets, but this is a general starting point to get you training! You’ll learn: -What wickets are and why they’re effective for top speed training -How to set them up for different ages and ability levels -How to use the right “lead-in” distance to hit full speed through the wickets -How to cue athletes to improve front-side mechanics and minimize back-kicking Recommended Setup: -(8–10) 6-inch mini hurdles -Measuring tape (to set consistent spacing) -Flat, open surface like a track or turf field Example Spacing: -Youth (ages 10–13): 4–5 feet apart -Older or faster athletes: Increase spacing and lead-in distance as needed 6-7ft apart for faster taller athletes with a 15-25yd lead-in. This simple setup helps athletes develop top end speed mechanics without overcomplicating things. Incorporate this drill weekly or every other week.
