When criminal psychologist, Dr Julia Shaw, combed through thousands of green crime cases she found a common pattern, a psychological profile for the people committing environmental crimes. She calls them the ‘six pillars of environmental crime’: ease, impunity, greed, rationalisation, conformity, and desperation. These pillars can be applied across different types of green crimes, from corporate fraud, to organised crime, to cases of hit men hired to kill environmental defenders. Understanding these pillars, and knocking them down one by one, Dr Shaw explains, is key to catching green criminals and preventing environmental crimes. In understanding the minds of the perpetrators we can map the key motivators of these criminals, and protect our planet. Dr Julia Shaw is a criminal psychologist who applies social science to some of the biggest issues of our time. She is a regular presenter of TV and audio programmes, including multiple series with the BBC. She is known for blending true crime storytelling with insights from scientific research. She is a bestselling author and has written four books. In 2025 she released her book, Green Crime: Inside the minds of the people destroying the planet and how to stop them. In Green Crime she profiles the perpetrators of six of the biggest environmental crimes in history, using insider interviews with the investigators who cracked each case.
