Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Most people know that chocolate is bad for dogs, but most people do not know why, symptoms to expect, and treatment. Dogs eating chocolate happens a lot, and it can be scary! When someone tells me, "My dog ate chocolate" I ask what kind of chocolate? There are three types of chocolate that I cover in today's video. White chocolate is the least serious chocolate for dogs. Milk chocolate is medium seriousness, and dark chocolate is the most serious. If a dog eats chocolate, a pet owner should always call their veterinarian no matter what type of chocolate it is. Chocolate can cause mild, medium, and serious symptoms in the dog. In this video I cover all the different symptoms that a pet owner my notice if a dog eats chocolate. Mild symptoms of a dog eating chocolate include: Vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, and restlessness. Medium symptoms of a dog that ate chocolate include: All the mild symptoms and cardiovascular symptoms like increase heart rate, increased blood pressure, and heart arrhythmia. The most serious symptoms include everything already covered and tremors, seizures, cardiac arrest. A veterinarian will do a handful of things to make sure a dog that ate chocolate it okay. A veterinarian will make a dog vomit and possibly give activated charcoal. In the more serious cases, a veterinarian may give give IV fluids and other supportive care options while the doggy his hospitalized for the chocolate toxicity.
