This episode introduces the Highlighting Thoughts module of CBT. This group of techniques are designed to help your client become aware of his thoughts and size them up in order to effectively challenge them. This module is fundamental to CBT as this therapeutic tradition's approach to reducing suffering almost entirely focuses on how a person thinks. CBT Techniques Made Simple This series reviews the techniques in the Cognitive Behavioral Therapist's tool kit. Each video outline one skill so you, the clinician, can master each intervention. We will describe each technique's concept, it's proper use, and possible problems. What Is CBT? Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based therapy. The American Psychological Association considers it the gold standard treatment for most mental health issues. The primary developers of CBT were Dr. Albert Ellis and later Dr. Aaron Beck. They were bothered by traditional therapy's lengthy treatment, low success, and unscientific approach. CBT breaks up our experience into three parts: thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. While all three play an important role in mental health, CBT focuses on changing our thinking. This then changes our emotions and actions. With improved feelings and better habits our thinking continues to improve. CBT highlights different cognitive distortions and biases. These get in the way of emotional wellbeing. Using simple techniques, the therapist challenges these distortions. After this, he teaches the client how to do the same. The goal of CBT is to empower the client with easy to use strategies to become their own therapist. This approach draws from many therapeutic tradition. It adapts different skills from psychodynamic, humanistic, existential, behavioral, and gestalt therapies. With CBT's huge menu of options it is a very flexible and adaptive approach. Another unique characteristic of CBT is its assumption clients are not damaged goods. Often, it's enough to make some tweaks here and there without intensive treatment. For this reason, CBT relies on a strong psychoeducational component. If this is not enough, CBT also has powerful techniques to heal deep suffering.
