In a modern spin on the phrase "It Takes a Village," Mercedes Flores shares why it truly Takes a Community! Listen as she shares her story and explains how having safe spaces available in the community positively impacted her life. Mercedes provides encouragement, while also challenging all to provide safe space for others in order to foster success. Mercedes is a provisional Certified Family Life Educator, who works with youth and organizations to promote positivity, unity, and community engagement. She is a native of Compton,CA and first generation college graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in family life education. Mercedes is currently studying for her Master’s in Recreation Administration. Mercedes is also involved in two non-profit organizations- GirlSpace International and Compton Advocates, in which she serves as Secretary, as well as an organizer of community events. When she is not working and volunteering, you will find her spending time with family, traveling, and going to concerts. This talk was filmed during a TEDx event using the TED conference format during the COVID-19 pandemic, with only a limited audience of cast and crew. TEDxComptonBlvd is an independently organized event.
