Lofoten Islands - Part 8 - English

The Lofoten Islands are a legendary travel destination with fascinating nature and vibrant coastal culture. Numerous superlatives attract travelers to enjoy the diversity of the symbiosis of a uniquely integrated architecture in this landscape. The combination of rough seas, sharp mountains, small fishing villages and white beaches with crystal clear water always captivates many people. The huge play of colors leaves nothing to be desired, especially in summer. And the flora and fauna also surprise with their diversity up here in the north. We follow the scenic route along the E10 from Fiskebøl to A, which winds along for 160km to the lower tip. We start from Andøya, drive via Langøya to the Skagenkrysset stop. What a great panorama with the Hadsel Bridge, the connection to Borøya! In Melbu we take the ferry to Fiskebøl - welcome to the Lofoten - great views await us at the Hattneset rest area with access to the water. Behind Sidpollnes a stopover at the Austnesfjord - a wooden path leads up to a hill with great all-round views. Passing Svolvaer we reach Gimsøystraumen and are once again amazed at the bridge architecture - the connection of two islands across a strait. We drive towards Barstrand to Hov to secure our accommodation for the next three nights. A fantastic white, fine sandy beach lies directly in front of us. Around 35km further on, at the Torvdalshalsen rest area, we look around from a hill over the island of Vestvagøya with its large agricultural areas. We go to Skreda, a great stopping place with a unique view over the fjord and the small holiday home next to it. Here is a sculpture mounted on the rock face - the Lofotruna - a symbol of the Lofoten's livelihood - people, fish and boats. Behind Flakstad we stop at the Brunstranda rest area and enjoy the fantastic view of the large white sandy beach with its unique panorama. Passing Ramberg we reach the small fishing village of Hamnøya, partly with houses built on stilts right on the water and surrounded by striking mountains. A few kilometers further we are in Reine, a world-famous small village that once lived from stockfish production and has now integrated tourism. We reach the southernmost place in the Lofoten, A. A walk up to the cliff gives us a view of the last islets in the Lofoten that can be reached by boat. A detour to the Nusfjord on the way back offers a great view from a hill over this small fishing village, which is surrounded by steep mountains all around. 90km further north we walk through Henningsvaer - probably the most famous fishing village in the Lofoten - in comparison the Venice of the North - with a unique stadium, surrounded by sea water and a fantastic postcard idyll. Far away from the main tourist route, Storholmen awaits us 60km further north, a beautiful, lonely and protected small island surrounded by water and mountains in the background. A visit is worth it!
