I want to paint every color as it transitions from gold to red and to green. . Autumn leaves me breathless How can I paint this ?? THE CHALLENGE There are several challenges in this piece 1 - preserving the white of the tree 2 - Creating a smooth transition of colors 3 painting the shadows in an effective and lively way One of the more difficult parts is creating the pattern of shadows Difficult because we - as humans - are not so good a random - we are better at repetitive marks so this requires some concentration The pattern and brush work to create the pattern is exercised in the drill and used throughout the following weeks THE DRAWING / DESIGN As we start to consider placing the Maple tree on the page we are overwhelmed with all those leaves - we could diligently follow the photograph and place each branch and leaf but to what end? - the painting would look like a painted photograph and the labor would drain our spirit. In such a case I would draw or sketch the main shape of the trunk and a few directional lines for branches or other important lines and rely on brush work to create the energy created by the leaves.
