Autumn is in full swing around the farm house now, with plums, damsons, sloe berries, elderberries and blackberries - all the wonderful harvest of autumn hanging off the trees and bushes. And that special quality to the light - soft, golden, nostalgic. Absolutely my favourite time of year. So we’ll be celebrating today by painting these gorgeous apples, which I just snipped off the tree across the road a few minutes ago. The challenge today, though, is not to get sucked too quickly into apple world, but to stay with the shapes and values long enough to make a good design. Of course the wonderful ChromaMagic wil be making an appearance so that we can nail those beautiful colours. Oh, and I’ll be painting on the new easel! So will be sharing some thoughts about that too, it’s a Richeson Santa Fe Classic II. Just don’t get me started on the casters… --------------------------- What you’ll need --------------------------- Surface: 10 × 8 Ampersand Gessobord panel Brushes: Mostly hogs today, although I’ll probably break out some silicoine spatulas and synthetic brushes for leaf shapes. Paints: Lead white Cad yellow (possibly bright yellow lake or cad yellow too) Quinacridone rose Green gold Transparent red oxide Raw umber Ivory black Maybe dioxazine purple and/or/ultramarine Medium: Linseed oil and a little solvent -----------------------------HELPFUL LINKS----------------------------- The app I use to investigate the colour is called ChromaMagic. You can find it on the Apple and Google Play stores, and there is also a Windows version. It's very inexpensive and extremely useful! If you struggle at all with judging values and colours, or with mixing, this is a great tool to help you calibrate your estimates by giving you immediate feedback on how close your guesses come. You can get the Munsell value scale - which allows you to translate values from the app directly to your painting - from Paul Centore on Ebay here, also very inexpensive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223003792036 Subscribe to my email list to get notifications of future live streams and other random stuff about painting in oils: https://www.learning-to-see.co.uk/sub...
