EXPO 2026: "Predators and Policies: Teaching ODEs by Modeling Florida's Alligator Ecosystem"

Sat | 1:30 PM–2:00 PM ET Steven Miller and Wael El Khateeb; Williams College, Williamstown MA USA Abstract: In anticipation of the impact covid would have, in early 2020 several mathematicians created the online Polymath Jr Summer Research Program; it's been so successful it runs annually, providing hundreds of students with opportunities to learn, apply and extend mathematics. We report on one of the projects we mentored: modeling predator–prey dynamics on Florida alligators and their role in wetland ecosystems. Our students had minimal backgrounds in the subject; this was a great way to excite them about learning the material and guide them to original research.
