The Crowd Myth. A talk by Professor Martyn Amos. Everyone thinks they know the crowd. We've all experienced the communal crush of a commute, the thrill of celebrating a last-minute winner with a sporting tribe, or the righteous fury of thousands of like-minded protesters. However, the idea of "the mob" - an irrational, destructive beast with a "group mind" - still dominates the popular perception of crowds. In this talk I’ll show how most of what we “know” about crowds is wrong. Far from being chaotic and unruly, crowds are often sources of resilience and order. Drawing on my own research, and that of others, I’ll explain how new ways of thinking about crowds promise to transform our view of the crowd, and hopefully banish – once and for all – the myth of the mob.
