A moment of calm, as we step into 2026 - Tewkesbury Sampleset 👇 👉 Here's a playlist of other organ favorites: • ✨ "Fiat Lux" ✨ Théodore Dubois | Hauptwerk... Keith Chapman (1945–1989) composed this serene Pastorale for the dedication of the Church of the Savior in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The new 900-seat sanctuary opened on Thanksgiving Day 1978, and Chapman, already serving as organist and choirmaster at nearby Wayne United Methodist Church, was a natural choice to contribute an original work for the occasion. He was principal organist of the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia from 1966 until his death, a position he assumed at just 20 years of age while still a student at the Curtis Institute. A child prodigy who began formal study at age five with a student of Marcel Dupré, he later studied with Richard Purvis at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and Alexander McCurdy at Curtis. He performed regularly with the Philadelphia Orchestra under conductors including Ormandy, Mehta, and Stokowski. Many of Chapman's works began as improvisations during his daily performances at Wanamaker's, where the repetition of familiar melodies allowed for harmonic experimentation. His compositions are marked by the lush, impressionistic harmonies of Debussy and Ravel, combined with the symphonic grandeur he championed throughout his career. The Pastorale exemplifies this style: gentle, unhurried, and richly coloured. Chapman and his wife Sally were tragically killed when their private plane crashed in the Colorado Rockies on 2 July 1989, returning from a concert in Los Angeles. This piece was published posthumously in the collection "At the Organ with Keith Chapman" (2000). https://www.alfred.com/at-the-organ-w...
