The first one is doing Mae geri with a chair in front of your front knee (in Zenkutsu position). For the beginners and intermediate practitioners, they can stand 30cm or a foot away from the chair. As you move up in their ranks, they need to be closer. I ask the black belts to touch the front knee to the edge of the chair. Of course, the idea is that with a chair in front, the practitioners are forced to bring their kicking knee high enough to clear the chair. If you have not used the chairs in this method, I strongly recommend it. It teaches the practitioners if they are lifting their knee high or not enough.
