The passaggio is the classical term for describing the break between different resonances in the voice (e.g. chest and head voice) I mention this a few times in this video but it bears repeating here - do not obsess over your passaggio! In my experience with students, I have found that fixating on it can actually cause more problems as it creates a sort of mental block. And this can become exasperated if you decide on certain notes as your passaggio. Because I have known singers to start tensing when they become aware they are heading their passaggio, or are singing a song that moves beyond it and they tense up/don't want to sing that song. But we can sing all songs, so I'm here to tell you that as weird as it sounds, to start smoothing through your passaggio, you should stop thinking about your passaggio. Yes that does sound weird I know! Although I really don't like assigning notes to the passaggio (for reasons above and also because we all have very different unique voices) I know that for some of you it is actually helpful. And I am here to be as helpful as possible! So here's a little chart of resonance/passaggio (again, not a definitive guide!!) - Lower Voices Chest - C3 to G3 Middle - G3 to G4 Head - G4 to C5 Higher Voices Chest - F3 to F4 Middle - F4 to G4 Head - G4 to C5+ I will do more videos on the passaggio as this one is Bel Canto (Classical technique) orientated. Classical singing is more head dominated than contemporary, so the next video will have a contemporary focus! In this video we start by having a chat about passaggio; what it is, where passaggio is in each voice, how to find passaggio in your voice, before getting into some exercises (at 10:20 if you wanted to skip ahead!) We start with some SOVT tongue trill arpeggios to get the voice going before moving onto passaggio focussed five note scales to ahh, ehh, eee, ohh and ooh. It's pretty repetitive, but I chat you through different positioning and where to feel the sound as you move smoothly through each note. Because ultimately that is the goal, to maintain smooth even singing throughout our entire voice. Which you can definitely do! New videos come every week so let me know in the comments what you'd like to hear about (Technique? Song breakdowns? Singer analysis?) We're a democracy at MusicForMy... so you get to chose!
