October 2021 has seen two major releases on Comino of injured birds successfully rehabilitated by BirdLife Malta. The first set of releases on October 8th included a Montagu's Harrier which had been under BirdLife Malta's care since the spring of 2021 and three Thick-knees which were confiscated from an illegal collection during the summer. The second releases on October 19th included a number of birds which had been confiscated or collected by BirdLife for rehab over the early autumn. These included a Dotterel, a Marsh-harrier and a Short-eared Owl which had been shot and kept illegally before eventually being confiscated. All these birds were ringed to ensure ongoing monitoring can be done, with hope that the birds have been able to continue their migration south without further negative involvement with humans. These cases highlight the ongoing persecution of illegal hunting and trapping which plagues the diverse array of bird species on the Maltese Islands.
