Get the energy moving in the hips and waist - essential for increasing life-force energy. Some easing stretches and movements for the waist and hips, followed by simple qigong flows to circulate the resulting energy. Do stay comfortably within your range of motion at all times. According to Qigong philosophy, life force energy is held in the "dantien" in the lower belly. Activating our hips and waist through movement increases this energy. It's no coincidence that we feel sexier and more alive when we move our hips! KNOCKING ON THE GATE OF LIFE A classic warm up for the spine. Let the loose fists knock first on the lower belly and lower back (the 'gate of life' point), and then on the lung points at the front of the shoulder. SHAKING Release any stuck energy and find yourself more in the present moment. LEG CIRCLES AND ANKLE CIRCLES A good loosening for the joints. HIP CIRCLES Horizontal and vertical. Feel free to explore and go one way and then the other. Widen the legs if it feels comfortable to do so. FIGURE EIGHT HIPS Draw a figure 8 with the hips, first pushing them forwards and then pulling them backwards. PUSH TO THE SIDE AND TWIST TO THE SIDE A lovely stretch for the waist and back. MERIDIAN SMOOTHING Use your hands to encourage a smooth flow of fresh energy through the meridian lines. TAI CHI OPENING This gentle expansion and contraction begins to open out the energy we've generated. HOLDING THE CHI BALL See if you can feel chi between your hands at hip level. A warmth, or a thickness in the air, or a magnetic feeling. Mine was quite wide at this point, you might find it more comfortably with your hands a bit closer together. MICROCOSMIC ORBIT Brings chi from the earth up through the legs and back, over the top of the head and then showering down over the front of the body, establishing a healthy flow. CIRCULATING THE CHI Start by circulating the energy at hip level, then slowly extend the movement to circulate chi through the torso, then up to the throat and the head.
